Weight Loss Appetite Suppressant Q &A

What is an appetite suppressant ?

Appetite suppressants  are a medicine that contain the active substance liraglutide. It is similar to a natural occurring hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) that is released from the intestine after a meal. Weight loss pens work by acting on receptors in the brain to make you feel full and hence control your appetite.

What are appetite suppressants used for?

They are used for weight loss in addition to diet and exercise in adults aged 18 and above who have:

  • BMI of 30 kg/m2 or greater (obese) or
  • BMI or 27 kg/m2 and less than 30kg/m2 (overweight) and weight related health problems (such as diabetes, high blood pressure, abnormal levels or fats in the blood or breathing problems during sleep called ‘obstructive sleep apnoea’).

BMI (Body Mass Index) is a measure of your weight in relation to your height. You should only continue using the Appetite Suppressant if you have lost at least 5% of your initial body weight after 12 weeks on the 3mg/day dose. Consult your healthcare professional before you continue. For more information on the medicine read the Patient Information Leaflet

How do I use the appetite suppressants ?

The active ingredient, liraglutide, comes in a pre-filled weight loss injection pen. Before you take the treatment for the first time, your healthcare professional will show you how to use the weight loss pen.

What dose do I take?

In your first four weeks of treatment, you will increase your daily treatment dose each week.
