Botox Overview – What is Botox used for?

Botox injections are used for both cosmetic and non-cosmetic conditions. Most commonly Botox is used to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles. The muscle-paralysing injections are popular as a cosmetic treatment but, due to its nerve-blocking effects, Botox can also be used to treat medical conditions, including headaches and migraines, excessive sweating, teeth grinding, neck spasms and an overactive bladder

How long does Botox last?

Botox injections usually begin working one to three days after treatment. Depending on the problem being treated, the effect may last three months or longer. To maintain the effect, you’ll need regular follow-up injections.

Botox blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles. The injected muscle can’t contract. That makes the wrinkles relax and soften. Botoxanti-aging treatments are most often used on forehead lines, crow’s feet (lines around the eye), and frown lines. Typically, the effects of Botox last for up to three to four months. However, if you train your facial muscles to contract less, the period of time for each treatment may be extended longer than three or four months

Botox Treatment for Crow’s Feet, Frown & Forehead Lines

  • Botox is a non-surgical injectable treatment that is used to treat dynamic lines and wrinkles caused from expression, making lines and wrinkles, such as crow’s feet and frown lines, less obvious.

Botox Treatment For Chin & Jawline

  • Botox can be used to create a slimmer face which is considered desirable in certain cultures.
  • Botox is injected to each side of the face into the masseter muscle. This weakens the muscle to create a slimmer more feminine appearance to the jawline.

Botox Treatment For Neck Wrinkles

  • Botox can be used to soften neck banding, fine lines and wrinkles in order to soften and rejuvenate the neck.

Non-Cosmetic Botox Treatments

Headaches and Migraines

If you experience frequent migraines, Botox injections may help reduce headache frequency. While the reasons why Botox helps people who suffer with migraines are not fully understood it is likely that it relaxes the muscles around the head and, thereby, reducing blood pressure within the brain. Botox may also play a role in reducing the nerves’ ability to send pain signals during a migraine.

Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)

Teeth Grinding is the unconscious grinding and clenching of the teeth that mostly takes place while we are asleep. It affects around one in four adults, with symptoms that can include:

  • Aching jaw
  • Headaches
  • Gum problems
  • Tooth enamel being eroded

Botox for bruxism is injected into the masseter muscle just below the cheekbone and the frontalis. This weakens the muscles to reduce clenching of the teeth and grinding which can result in pain and headaches. The treatment relaxes the muscle to stop the involuntary movements. Treatments for teeth grinding focus mainly on preventing dental damage. New studies have shown that using Botox for bruxism could effectively stop grinding in the first place.

Before you have Botox injections you should be evaluated by your dentist and doctor as well as a maxillofacial specialist, a surgeon who specializes in the teeth, jaws neck and head.

After this consultation, you should be clear on your diagnosis and better informed to choose your treatment. Your dentist may recommend trying other measures first. If you tend to grid during the night a mouth guard is recommended.

Excessive Sweating

Botox injections for sweating under the armpits. Botox injections block the nerve signals responsible for sweating, stopping the sweat glands from producing too much sweat. Follow-up treatments are typically needed in four to six months. However, some patients can go longer between treatments.

Overactive Bladder

Botox injections can also help reduce urinary incontinence caused by an overactive bladder. Patients with the condition have a sudden, strong feeling of needing to pass urine and sometimes urine leakage (incontinence) associated with urgency. Usually, patients need to pass urine frequently. Botox injections are effective in 70% of patients, meaning that their urgency and incontinence are either significantly better or cured.

The procedure is not a treatment for stress urinary incontinence (leakage of urine when you exercise, sneeze or strain).

Bell’s Palsy

Botox is one of the most effective treatments for patients with Bell’s palsy or partial facial paralysis. Over activity of some facial muscles may occur following facial nerve palsy. This can lead to unwanted movements in parts of the face.  For example, the eye may close when chewing and smiling or spontaneous facial twitching can occur.  Botox injections applied to the affected area temporarily paralyses the underlying muscles and stops the unwanted movement.

Are there any side effects of Botox?

Botox injections are relatively safe. Though minor side effects can occur and include:

  • Pain, swelling or bruising in the area where the botox was injected
  • Headache, tiredness or flu-like symptoms
  • Droopy eyelid or arched eyebrows
  • Crooked smile or drooling
  • Eye dryness or excessive tearing

Who performs the treatment?

Botox treatments should be administered by an experienced, highly trained practitioner, in a clean and hygienic medical environment. It’s important that injections be placed precisely in order to avoid side effects. Botox therapy can be risky if it’s administered incorrectly. Cosmetech’s consultant surgeons have a background in head, neck and face reconstructive surgery, plastic surgery and maxillofacial surgery.
